Chipotle may have started the National Burrito Day celebration early, but there's plenty of other restaurants serving up deals on Thursday, April 4.
The cooked-up holiday hits on the first Thursday of April and usually means burrito lovers can choose from specials and promotions at many Mexican food chains.
The burrito, which means "little donkey," likely arose from the co-mingling of foods in Mexico with that of Europeans, who arrived after the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, wrote Jeffrey Pilcher, a professor of food history at the University of Toronto, in his book "Planet Taco: A Global History of Mexican Food."
Burros, or donkeys, likely inspired the name "burrito" because street vendors sold burritos from baskets carried by burros and the donkeys often also bore a cylindrical bedroll.
